  • A Busy Week Ahead

    Fri 14 Jul 2017 M. Purdy

It may be the last week of the academic year but there's no winding down at Seaburn Dene! In actual fact it's one of the busiest weeks of the year. But, as we head towards the six week break, we can look back on a year full of challenge, activity and new ideas and projects. Thank you to each and every one of our families for their continuing support, turning up to assemblies, Parents Evenings and special occasions and supporting children with their work at home.

    Year 6 Presentation Afternoon-Tuesday

On Tuesday afternoon guests will be delighted to see what is always an emotional presentation designed by Mrs Wilson and  our leavers in Year 6, followed by a formal presentation by the teachers then a high tea created by Gillian. Last year it was absolutely scrumptious! This event is a ticketed event and no one without a ticket will be allowed to attend. Younger siblings will be welcomed free of charge into the school Tea Club. Usually this very special occasion closes at around 5.30pm. We look forward to seeing the families of Year 6 on Tuesday at 2.30pm.

    Showcase-Wednesday

Yesterday I had a wonderful day, spending time in every classroom to see what children are learning in their island project. I saw everything from making contour maps to a forensic investigation. Everywhere, children were very excited in their learning so we would like to bring this altogether with our Showcase event. The last showcase was so well attended that there wasn't room to move so, this year, we've split it into 2 sessions. The Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 takes place between 1.30 and 2.30pm and Key Stage 2 from 2.30pm to 3.20pm. Parents may take a look in classrooms other than their own child's too.

Year 6 Leavers' Meal and Disco

It's best outfits on for the Year 6 celebration meal at Bellini's followed by a disco in the hall. Our resident DJ Dr. Cool Smith will be playing the tracks children select so it'll be the hottest venue in town!

Friday 21st July is the last day of term. Children return to school on Wednesday 6th September.

    Summer Holiday Project

Throughout the whole school, from Reception to Year 6, children will have a book (or in the case of Year 5 a collection of poems) to read during the school holidays. Inspired by their reading, we are challenging children to tap into their creativity and research skills to create a wonderful scrap book based on their book. They may think about including features such as their own

    • maps,
    • fashion design
    • research about animals featured in their book
    • cartoons or illustrations
    • casting the film of the book
    • story board

The list is endless and there's no reason why children shouldn't make models too. All entries need to be in by Monday 11th September for judging. There will be a class prize and also whole school prizes but best of all is the enjoyment you will all get from the project. The school is providing scrapbooks for everyone so, I'm sure, many of you will be working as a family...I only wish I could make one too!

  • Reaching for the Stars...and beyond

    Mon 10 Jul 2017 M. Purdy

THANK YOU EVERYONE...for a very successful Meet and Greet evening. It was a fabulous turnout and my apologies for the laryngitis and the need for a microphone. We hope you enjoyed both the whole school presentation and the opportunity to discover what lies ahead for your children in their new classes.

    FORMER PUPILS

This week we've had wonderful news about former pupils of SDPS. It's lovely to hear about their successes and see the excitement of very proud parents preparing for graduation ceremonies. Here is this week's roll of honour:

Aden Bannister: 2:1 in Building Surveying

Andrew Berston: Masters of Electronics and Electrical Engineering-First

Sarah Cruddas : Masters in Pharmacy Degree-First

Peter Williams: First in Applied Biomedical Sciences

Sarah Williams: 2:1 in English and Education

    Congratulations everyone!

If you know of former pupils who would like to be featured on our website please send us details (and a photo would be great).

And now on a serious note:

At this end of the Summer term emotions are running high, with some children becoming a little fractious. It's time for a break. However, it has come to my attention that parents are approaching children other than their own at the beginning and end of the day and there are cases of parents approaching other parents in an intimidating way on school property.

We have clear expectations with regards to parental behaviour on school property. No parent should ever approach another child or confront a parent. Any complaints about children's behaviour towards another child in school should be made to Mr. Howe or, in his absence, Mrs Wilson. If parents threaten other parents on school property they may be subject to a ban.

It is often the case that children have upsets with other children. Nine times out of ten, the children sort this out themselves. Parents becoming involved tends to make the situation worse so it's better to keep at a distance. If it's more than just a little fall out then it's appropriate to ask the school for help and support.

I hope this helps and supports every family in our school.

  • Lost property!

    Thu 06 Jul 2017 S Baker

As you can see we are inundated with lost property! This photograph shows the unnamed items that have been handed in to the office since January, anything that was named was returned immediately to the child.

Can we ask parents to either attach name labels, or purchase a permanent marker to write on the tags. ALL items need to be labelled, including coats, shoes, trainers, trousers, skirts, vests - EVERYTHING! If using a pen, the names need to be checked, at least every term, as continuous washing does make the ink fade.

PE bags - we find that the smaller the PE bag, the more likely it is for children to leave things lying around the cloakroom/classroom. Our school PE bags are large enough to allow the children to easily put their shoes/kit in without difficulty, and as they are named on the outside, staff find it simple to return items, even when the children are not in school. At only £3.50, it is worth the investment as they last for years!

The property that is not claimed is recycled. This year we are going to send any reusable items to Wearside Women in Need to help support their important work and everything else will go to charity as scrap - lets see if we can reduce this for next year!

  • Meet and Greet

    Mon 03 Jul 2017 M. Purdy

    Meet and Greet

All our parents will be enthusiastic to discover what children need to know and learn in the next 12 months and this very popular evening provides a flavour of the year ahead.  Even if you have only an hour to spare, why not come along at 6.15pm for the introduction in the hall and first class session.

    Update on Mr. Howe

Thankfully, Mr Howe is now out of hospital but, as he has to keep his leg elevated,  will be out of action for some time. I will be seeing him at home tomorrow afternoon so will pass on all your kind wishes.

    CASA Performing Arts

Singing, dancing and acting-CASA will be running their very energetic Summer School at Seaburn Dene once again.
