    Sports Day - Update

Please look out for a letter which will be going home tonight giving information about our Sports Day on Wednesday, 19th June. There is a slip attached which needs to be completed by ALL parents, whether your child is school meals or packed lunches, to let us know whether they will be having a family picnic lunch on the field or not. It is important that we know which children are staying in school so that our brilliant kitchen staff can order the appropriate lunches for them and we have appropriate members of staff to supervise them during the lunch break. This is always a wonderful day and we want it to go as smoothly as possible, so we would appreciate a quick response from you.

Derwent Hill-  After half term many of our Year 6 class are spending Monday to Friday experiencing the many adventurous activities at Sunderland's Derwent Hill Education Centre. Whether canoeing, hill walking or climbing, the days are full of energetic tasks and team problems to solve. This will be an amazing experience for all those concerned and we will be preparing the children for the residential beforehand. Watch this space.

Sporting success: Well done to our Football and rugby teams. Our football team sit top of their league following a 3-2 win over St John Bosco RC Primary last week and are awaiting the results of other games to confirm whether we have, in fact, won the league again. Our Y5 tag rugby team went undefeated in the Monkwearmouth Cluster Competition and lifted the trophy - for the third year running - after defeating Redby Academy in the final. Well done to everyone concerned. The final included a haul of ten tries and the performance has contributed to SDPS climbing up the school sports cluster rankings.

The Different Faces of Britain- two fantastic assemblies really brought together what it means to be British this week. Yr 4 based theirs on the story of Stephen Lawrence, while Yr 1 - among other things - looked at our Royal Family through the ages. The messages couldn't have been more different, but equally important.

Year 6 The Year 6 SATs are finally over so we can all get back to business as normal. Congratulations to our Year 6 for their fantastic attitude, resilience and focus last week-we are proud of their efforts. Now we look forward to their Yr 6 production, scripts go out today.

    BASKETBALL

How proud we all were of our Y5 children on Sunday. Representing our city, Sunderland in the Newcastle Eagles' "Champions of Champions" finals at the Eagles' Arena, they lost out - despite playing marvelously - by a single basket from reaching what would have been a deserved final. In these circumstances, the children were quite rightly disappointed. With a few tears... But they couldn't have played any better - facing some excellent schools from North Tyneside, Newcastle and Gateshead and their sportsmanship, growth mindset and determination throughout were a credit to our school. Parents and families supported, staff - Mr Traves, Mr Ashton and Mrs Houston - buoyed the team - and, once again, Seaburn Dene was there - amongst the best in the North East. It is worth remembering that this Y5 - just 17 of them - from our small school, competed against much larger schools, year groups three times the size of ours and our character and attitude shone through. Brilliantly. Well done Team Seaburn.

    SATS NEXT WEEK

Time has flown, but already our current Year 6 will be taking their SATs tests next week. Children and staff have worked really hard throughout the year to support the children and are well prepared. We will be opening the staff room for Y6 breakfasts, served by myself and some of the staff. Of course, after all is said and done, we believe that our children are defined by more than the results of a test. They need to know, therefore, that if they do not attain the standard, it's not the end of the world. We are well aware that all of our Year 6 have many varied, wonderful qualities and will do well in secondary education and, as adults, will become valued members of the community in which they live. It only goes for me to say good luck to all of Year 6-we are proud of you.

    PE Kits

During the past few weeks the number of children without a PE kit in school has increased. We are running low on spare kit and staff will be sending reminders home that children need their kit in school to participate in PE lessons and experience the full curriculum. We fundamentally believe in the value of PE - particularly in laying the foundations for healthy lifestyles. Allied to this, we are delighted that our new running track is complete, which will give classes the opportunity to take part in the Daily Mile. To do that, they need trainers/plimsolls in their PE bags. Please ensure your child brings a kit into school, leaving it on their pegs until half term, so they can play a full part in this vibrant curriculum.
