    Christmas Parties

Just a quick reminder that, on our various party days, children in Year 1 to Year 6 should come to school in their school uniform but will be given the opportunity to change into 'party' clothes at lunchtime. As children in the Foundation Stage Unit have their party in the morning, they will come to school in their party clothes, but we would remind parents that the children will still be going out to play in the yard, so suitable footwear and warm coats will definitely be required!

Tea Towels, Tinsel and Wise Men

Last week we had the frenetic joy of the Key Stage 1 production "Census Sums" and, for the first time two performances for parents, carers and family. With a mix of humour, high energy and catchy songs, a host of characters and the final Nativity scene, the play set the tone for Christmas in school. Well done to our hard-working teachers and staff who helped to bring the play together in such a short time and thank you to everyone who turned up to watch this delightful production and supported the school. It truly was standing room only!

    Christmas Message from Mr Howe

As I write this, I can sense the excitement spreading of our final week in school and just seven more "sleeps" until Christmas Eve. From tomorrow, children will be arriving in school today with their party plates, ready for the traditional end of Autumn term. As it's the last week before the Christmas holidays, by Friday, I expect children will be brimming with anticipation as the magic of this particular season really becomes evident.  This has to be the most wonderful week in the school calendar.

The term has truly flown past with so many highlights, successes and challenges. As a Platinum Sports School, Mr Ashton and Mr Traves have been instrumental in organising a host of superb sporting opportunities and helping us be the best we can possibly be, whether it's tag rugby or street dance. Musically, our school choir has come into its own, thanks to Mrs Houston, performing so well at The Bridges for Grace House Children's Hospice and we are looking to build on this success, with a combined Yrs 3, 4 and 5 musical - Pantastic - in the Spring. Rock Choir meets on a Monday and we are hoping to add a new, instrument-led dimension to this in the New Year - watch this space.

There have been so many lovely comments about the children, their splendid behaviour and positive attitude from our many visitors too. Following the excellent Christmas lunch, many guests I spoke to paid the compliment to our children, particularly about how well they spoke and conducted themselves, so, as parents, you must be bursting with pride.

And, in Nursery, it was wonderful to welcome some of our new January starters to school last Friday, as they begin their journey with us in the Seaburn Dene "family".

Finally, may I wish you all a magical Christmas time and a very happy 2019. We'll look forward to seeing you all on our return to school on Monday 7th January 2019.

  • A musical Christmas

    Thu 06 Dec 2018 Mr J Howe
What a wonderful way to really begin our Christmas celebrations - in music. Our fabulous school choir, led by Mrs Houston, led the whole school carol concert at Fulwell Methodist Church, followed by singing in The Bridges to raise money for Grace House. This was followed on Friday, with our Foundation Stage Unit's singing around the Christmas tree.
  • Advent

    Sun 02 Dec 2018 Mr J Howe

    Posada and Advent

Our first Monday in December and the children were full of talk of advent calendars and chocolates before breakfast this morning - as it should be. In the church, advent is that period of waiting and this morning we explored advent and the Mexican tradition of the Posada. Of course, four of our volunteers from Year 4 brought the Posada procession to life and it continues a tradition, originally started by Reverend Child.

Las Posadas starts on the 16th December, when people visit one another's houses and re-enact the role of Mary and Joseph, as they headed out on their long journey to Bethlehem.  So continuing in this tradition,  the school's own Posada, featuring wooden replicas of Mary and Joseph will be travelling to children different classes, having already started this weekend, staying with Jessica in Reception.  One child will be able to take them home for the evening to look after, with the adults in the house, write an imaginary diary entry and return Mary and Joseph back to school the following day. We will catch up with Mary and Joseph on their travels over the next few weeks.

    Christmas Fayre

Thank you everyone - our fantastic Christmas fayre raised over £1,300 for school funds, a huge increase last year. Thank you to the Friends of Seaburn Dene Primary, all the volunteers, staff and families for your support and generosity.

    Christmas Diary - week 1

This week our Christmas build up continues in earnest, with the choir heading out under the direction of our musical maestro Mrs Houston.

On Wednesday, at 1.20pm, the choir will head over to Falstone Court old peoples' home in Roker to sing to residents.

On Thursday, our choir will be leading the school in our Carol Service at Fulwell Methodist Church at 10am. Please note the only adults able to attend will be those helping escort classes - due to the size of the venue. Our choir will then be singing to shoppers in The Bridges from 1.30pm.

Finally on Friday, our Foundation Stage Unit will be holding their annual "singing around the Christmas tree" in school.

    Fly Tippers

At some point over the weekend, fly tippers drove over a van across our school fields to the cemetery wall to tip garden waste and other assorted rubbish. Unfortunately this is becoming more common and is blighting parts of Sunderland, by people who have no consideration or care that these are facilities use by our community and children. If you notice anyone behaving suspiciously and driving vehicles across the school fields at unusual times of the day, particularly on an evening or at the weekend, please inform the police.
