Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
We Can't Do It.......... Yet!
This mantra has become the Seaburn Way. Now we won't ever give up at the first hurdle because we know that with practice, practice, practice we will eventually be able to succeed. It's all about effort and resilience so, when spellings are hard and times tables difficult, remember to say to your children "you can't do it YET but if we keep trying you will get it!"
Congratulations To Our Friend Simon Harmer
A baby is always wonderful news but especially so when you are Simon Harmer. Simon is the Invictus athlete who spent a day with us last year. Having stood on an IED and lost his legs, doctors did not think children would be possible. However, his family welcomed adorable Emilia, baby number 3 at the weekend. That's resilience and determination! Congratulations to Simon and his wife from all the children, staff and families at Seaburn Dene Primary School.
VOMITING BUG-48 HOUR CLEARANCE
There is a particularly nasty vomiting bug travelling around school this week. Today it has struck 3 members of staff and many children from nursery to Year 6. We will talk to children about washing hands today and if you wish to equip your child with an anti bacterial hand gel please do. Unfortunately, most vomiting bugs are airborne so, if your child is ill, please follow our 48 hour procedure to help us to contain the spread of this awful virus. Your child (and staff) should stay away from school for 48 hours after the last incident of diarrhea or vomiting even if they appear to have recovered.
SUPERB MEET AND GREET EVENING
It was wonderful to see so many of you at The Meet and Greet last Thursday. Although parents themselves found quite a few maths and grammar questions challenging, they expressed their confidence in our staff in preparing children for the changes in assessments. This positive attitude has become the Seaburn Way where nothing is insurmountable and mistakes are a vital component in the learning process.
POETRY RECITAL COMPETITION
This week teachers are selecting two finalists from each class for the Annual Poetry Recital Competition which will take place on National Poetry Day on Thursday 8th October. There will be a panel of judges to decide an overall winner. I have heard that our reigning champion, Sarah in Year 5, is working hard to impress the judges once again so my advice to finalists is to make it original and entertaining in any way you can.
WEAR GREEN DAY
Friday 25th September is the Macmillan Coffee Morning. Last year we held an event but, as so many of you work, this year we are holding a "wear green" day in exchange for £1. If everyone joined in we could raise £200 for this very worthwhile cause.
DO YOU BRING THE CAR TO SCHOOL? THINK CHILD!
It was with horror that several parents witnessed a very thoughtless driver outside of school this morning. Having parked illegally on yellow lines, this person proceeded to reverse up Torver Crescent whilst talking into a hand held mobile phone...once again breaking the law. Please, please always drive with the maximum of care and caution. With crowded pavements, congestion on the roads, toddlers and school aged children, we want everyone to be safe.
MEET AND GREET EVENING
Our very popular Meet and Greet evening takes place this Thursday evening (17th). Beginning at 6.15pm in the school hall then moving into classrooms, it is your opportunity to learn about the year ahead for your child.
LOOKING GOOD
Congratulations to all our parents for their efforts in ensuring children are in full school uniform. The children look smart and ready for learning. Hair is tied back, shoes cleaned and children have an air of pride as they walk down the corridors. We couldn't do it without you.
Amazing Behaviour
On Thursday last week I was privileged to take a group of 16 children and several other family members to Newcastle Theatre Royal to see "The Sound of Music". The show was incredibly moving and our children were mesmerised by the wonderful acting. Several times members of the public stopped me to praise the children for their outstanding behaviour so congratulations to these children and their families. It makes organising excursions an absolute pleasure.
Congratulations to Year 3
At the end of the Summer term there is a concentrated focus in primary schools on Year 6 as they prepare to leave primary education. However, I would like to congratulate the children who are now in Year 3 on their amazing SATs results. In every area they achieved standards above 2014 national standards with 100% of children attaining Level 2 in reading, writing and maths and 100% of the class achieving expected progress when measured against their Foundation Stage scores. Their success is down to their own hard work, outstanding teaching and excellent parental support.
Welcome to our New Pupils
Across the school we have welcomed new children into virtually every class. We hope that they, along with their families, treasure this very special time in their school life as it passes incredibly quickly. Although our numbers are growing significantly, there are still a few spaces in some of our year groups and especially in Year 1 so if you have a new neighbour struggling to find a school for their child, please pass on our details.
And finally....some website statistics
Last week 64 people opened our weekly bulletin and 43 the diary dates. On average 34 seconds was spent reading the news.
We had 290 visitors from the UK, 5 from USA and 1 from each of France, India, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
It's lovely to hear the chitter chatter of children as they begin their learning yet stay excited about their holiday adventures and experiences. Schools are very empty and soulless buildings without children bringing them to life so I am delighted to be back into routine once again.
THE NEW FENCE
The Governors Premises Committee are always looking for ways to improve the school for the benefit of your children and this Summer were able to finance a new fence for the large playground. This fence will provide a much better level of security for children on the playground during lessons and breaks. We were expecting it to arrive during September but had a wonderful surprise on returning to school. However, this morning it is clear that it has created some congestion problems in the "holding" area. It will take us a few days to sort this out but I am politely requesting that children say goodbye to you on arrival and enter through the second gate with bags and coats. They should not return back through the gate and it would help if parents could then move away from the congested area. At the same time, parents are very welcome to come onto the playground to speak to staff and similarly I will encourage staff to go beyond the fence-it's new for us all.
WE ARE HOPING FOR A VERY HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR
There are too many highlights from last year to mention individually-from Simon Harmer's visit to amazing drama productions and fantastic SATs results and everything else in between. Today I have been finalising a trip to Newcastle Theatre Royal to see "The Sound of Music" which takes place on Thursday so that sets the ball rolling for another year full of learning and enrichment.
MEET AND GREET-Thursday 17th September
As a staff we are continually learning about how children learn so our Meet and Greet this year will be very different. Mr. Howe supported by Mr. Ashton will begin by explaining how Mindsets impact on learning as we are keen to develop "The Seaburn Way" where anything is possible for everyone. To help you when you hear children read we will also explain the superb advice we were given on our training day in July. You will also be able to meet your child's teacher and hear about the year ahead so we look forward to spending the early evening with you. Children are welcome if they are of an age when they can sit quietly while teachers share information with you.
NEW STAFF
A huge official welcome to Miss Bliss in Year 5, Mrs Houston in Yr 3 and Mr. Edwards who is working alongside Mr. Howe in Yr 4. Mr. Edwards is training to be a primary school teacher and will spend most of the year working in our school. We are delighted that all three have joined us and hope they enjoy working with us towards achieving outstanding status.
Mrs Tough is returning this term in a part time capacity. Hasn't that 6 months passed quickly?
