At Seaburn Dene Primary School, pupils in Upper Key Stage Two receive training to support play, sports and active engagement across the school as Play Leaders. Working with staff and coaches during the first half of the Autumn Term, our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils complete the Playground Leaders Award, developing the skills they need to lead play safely and confidently.
The purpose of the Play Leaders programme is to build leadership, teamwork and communication skills, while helping to create positive, active and inclusive playtimes for all children. Play Leaders organise a variety of activities, support younger pupils, and ensure that everyone has opportunities to join in, be active, and enjoy their breaktimes.
Following their training, Play Leaders help with:
Organising and leading playground games and activities
Looking after and helping select new playground and sports equipment
Supporting younger pupils who may need someone to play with
Encouraging fair play, teamwork and positive behaviour
Each lunchtime, Play Leaders run activities for either KS1 or KS2. They wear a distinctive purple Play Leader hoodie, making them easy to spot on the yard.
A weekly Play Leader timetable is displayed in Year 5 and Year 6 so children know who is on duty and which activities are available.
