Our Reducing Food Waste Journey

This term, our school has been on an inspiring Reducing Food Waste journey, bringing together pupils, staff and experts to make a real difference to our environment.

Led by Mr Good, our brilliant Eco Team, Dr Meryl Batchelder from the Ministry of Eco Education, and Naomi from The Refuse Café, we have explored what happens to the food we throw away and how we can take action to reduce it.

Together, we created a whole‑school action plan to cut down food waste, filmed our work, and even shared it at a regional conference—a fantastic achievement for our young environmental leaders.

As part of our learning, we have been asking big questions: Where does food waste go? How does compost work? What makes healthy soil? We’ve discovered that only 3% of the Earth’s surface is suitable for growing all the food we need—an eye‑opening fact that shows just how important it is to protect our resources.

This week, our Eco Team proudly presented the results of our second food waste audit in assembly. The improvements were outstanding. These results show what can happen when a school community works together with purpose and passion.

I am incredibly excited to continue working with our amazing team of Waste Warriors as they roll out their second action plan, helping us reduce food waste even further and get more healthy food into tummies instead of bins.

A huge congratulations to:

  • Phoebe in Year 4 for winning the Food Waste Poster Competition

  • Year 6, who achieved the highest reduction in food waste of any class this term

Your creativity, commitment and leadership are making a real difference.

Our journey continues—and the impact is growing every day. 🌱
