Year 1 will be investigating:

The Queen's Coronation/Gunpowder Plot/Christopher Columbus/Mary Anning

Through this topic children will be developing the historical skills of:

  • improving their awareness that pictures, stories and accounts represent the past.
  • asking relevant questions about the past
  • describing historical events and significant people with support
  • with support, being able to place these events in order on a simple timeline
  • using historical language, e.g years, decades, centuries

History Link-we will hear stories about great explorers e.g Sir Edmund Hillary, Captain James Cook (regional link)

Local link-children will have the opportunity to visit Durham Cathedral.

 

History Link-children will discover the history of Durham Cathedral and it's links to Lindisfarne. They will also discover:

GREAT AND GHASTLY EVENTS-History 

 

  • Listening to stories, looking at newspaper articles and pictures, we will explore events of the past so that we can ask questions and find out the answers. In our accounts we will use historical language and think about why people behaved as they did. 
  • We will learn to place the three main events on a timeline.

 

Year 2 will learn about:

  • The Plague and the Great Fire of London
  • The First Moon Landing

 

Regional Link-children will investigate the Victoria Hall disaster

 

They will research one other great or ghastly event or person.

LET'S REMEMBER-history

Through this topic we will learn about the people who died during the World Wars and put the wars in chronological order. We will learn to ask historical questions.

 

Regional Link-Inspired by the War Memorial at Mowbray Park, this topic is about poppies, why we wear them and what it is that we are remembering.

LIFT THE TEACHER AND CASTLES-Design Technology and history

 

Finding out about castle life, medieval weapons and how to attack a castle and win using the DT skills we discovered when lifting the teacher!

 

Through this topic we will develop our historical skills of thinking about the actions of knights, lords and peasants so that we can describe their lives using historical language.

As  historians we will investigate how and why buildings and structures changed through several ages. This will develop our historical skills in:

We will look back at Sunderland's ship building heritage tracing it as far back as the 1400s to 1900. We will discover why Sunderland was a great port, the goods that passed through the port and what the ships built here were used for.

We will map out the regeneration of the shipyards.

We will complete our study about Europe.

 

TRANSPORT AND TRADE- history

We will begin by looking at transport today and how everyday goods are transported to us.

 

We will then study two periods in history with a focus on transport and trade-the Anglo Saxons who used boats and traded particularly in livestock and the Vikings who developed longboats and traded with Britain.

LANGUAGE-history

We will begin by exploring the different languages spoken throughout multi cultural Britain today. We will look at local folklore and songs.

 

We will explore how the Egyptians used language to communicate and will discover the different writing they used for inscriptions and official documents.

 

We will also explore how communication changed between the Stone and Iron Ages.

We will also study parts of a Shakespearean play to find out how language has changed since Elizabeth 1.

As historians Year 4 will also investigate the amazing buildings built by the Romans, how they built centres for regional control and the tools they used for engineering.

 

Buildings-the Anglo Saxons

 

Regional Link-we will find out about the importance of farming in Anglo Saxon daily life by visiting Jarrow Hall (Bede's World).

We will begin our topic by looking back at Sunderland during the industrial revolution of the 1800s. We will discover what was transported from Sunderland docks and find out how the building of South Dock and introduction of the railroads into Sunderland improved the economy. Regional Links:

We begin this topic by asking why we have so many Italian restaurants and other places with Italian heritage  to eat in Sunderland. 

 

We take a look at our twin city Saint Nazaire, the similarities and differences.

 

We will find out about some exciting and beautiful places in Europe to include:

  • countries
  • capitals
  • major cities
  • airports
  • famous landmarks
  • natural physical features

We will look at the difference in temperature and climate between northern and southern Europe.

We will complete our Eurovision topic by collating our topic on Istanbul and finding out about where other children have visited during the 6 week holidays.

We will begin by discovering how everyday goods are transported around the world today. (geography link).

We will investigate and explore the industrial North East and how industry has changed throughout history to the present day.

LANGUAGE-history

We will begin by exploring our regional dialects and interviewing residents. We will take a look at the history of the Post Office, where they were located and the importance of the postal system in the past 100 years.

 

As historians we will discover language in Roman and Anglo Saxon times, how Romans used the written word extensively and how Anglo Saxons used the written word to spread Christianity.

We will find out how to create buildings that can withstand the shake of an earthquake.

With Christmas in mind, we will begin our Spring topic early by comparing and contrasting the lives of today's richest and poorest people.

We will study the English Civil War and take a look at life during Stuart times.

We will begin by exploring our own personal achievements. This will be followed by a look at some of the things in  modern life that we consider to be achievements e.g technologies that have transformed our lives.

 

We will then take a look at Tudor and Stuart explorers, setting sail to discover and explore new countries.

We will then find out about Iron Age Druids and how the Romans tried to stop their work. We will also take a look at some of the Roman gods.

With Christmas in mind, we begin our Spring term topic 3 weeks before the festivities.

We look at how much a family in today's society may spend on Christmas and compare it to Christmas for the homeless.

RICH AND POOR-We will relate this to the modern world with our literature link "Trash" by Andy Mulligan

 

 

 

Through the Rich & Poor topic we will develop our skills in history by:

  • investigating evidence and draw conclusions e.g was there such a thing as "haves" and "have nots" during the Stone Age
  • Considering the social and political contexts of evidence to ensure its reliability.
  • Using historical language appropriately in our work.
  • Looking at no change or rapid change within a time period e.g Tudors v 20th century
  • looking at the issue across history from Stone Age to modern times.
