Headteacher

Miss M. Purdy

Immediately after leaving The College of Ripon and York St. John I began teaching in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. It was at the peak of Princess Diana and Fergie hysteria so, as I had to drive home through the Queen's Sandringham estate,  I would often pass the royals enjoying their weekends away from London. With a few years' teaching experience I embarked on an Advanced Diploma in Education working with the inspirational Mary Jane Drummond, a tutor at the Cambridge Institute of Education. From Norfolk I moved to Shropshire to head up English in a large junior school. The National Curriculum was introduced during my time there. Being a glutton for punishment, I decided to study for a Masters Degree, travelling to Chester College once a week after school. I then moved as Deputy Head to a school in Lincolnshire where we experienced the very first primary OFSTED inspection. The experience encouraged me to spend a year seconded from my job to inspect schools around England for OFSTED and I achieved registered inspector status. However, missing working with children and developing staff, I returned to working in school as a headteacher in Lincolnshire where I stayed for 3 years before moving north to become the headteacher of Seaburn Dene Primary School in 2000. You will often find me working with children as they are my motivation to build a school where they feel safe and where they develop a love of learning that will follow them through their whole life.

Deputy Headteacher and Year 4 Teacher

Mr. J. Howe

After graduating from the University of York St John with a degree in history, my career took me into writing where I was to forge a successful and award-winning career in journalism. Across the North East, I worked for all the major regional newspapers from The Journal to The Evening Chronicle, rising to the position of News Editor. At the same time, volunteering in various schools in Sunderland allowed me to experience the world of teaching and this prompted me to change careers, starting with the Graduate Teacher Programme direct route into Highfield Community Primary School in Sunderland. After graduating from the University of Sunderland, I started my NQT year at St Paul's CE Primary in Ryhope. While there I eventually became part of the senior leadership team, literacy, PE co-ordinator and KS2 leader. At the same time, I developed a role as a writing moderator for the local authority. In September 2014, I joined Seaburn Dene Primary as deputy head teacher. Outside of school, I coach rugby in Sunderland, have two primary age children and still enjoy writing - whenever possible.
